BALTIMORE, MD- The Sankofa Community Development Corporation (SCDC) in  partnership with the S. Rock Glen Ave. Homeowners Association, held its first community outreach activity on Saturday, April 21, 2001.  The Community Lot clean up was held at the corner of S. Rock Glen and Frederick Ave. and coincided with the Mayor’s Clean block initiates held the same day.

The lot which is common property belonging to the S. Rock Glen Ave. homeowners has been an eyesore in the 5000 block of Frederick Ave. for about 10 years. During that time, the homeowners have attempted to enlist the help of the City in maintaining the lot.

Working in conjunction with The Office of the President City Council, and the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, supplies were delivered and 25 volunteers consisting of Sankofa Executive Board members and  S. Rock Glen Homeowners provided over 125 work hours to clear and clean the 1/4 acre lot.

Sankofa CDC President and CEO Edward  Smith , Jr. recommended  and agreed with the President of the association , Tom Bartnick that the land should be used as a mini park for the homeowners and their families. The homeowners will permanently maintain the lot in the future.

Since the property is private the City was unable to provide the level of manpower necessary to assist.  The CDC met with the group and offered their services.  Sankofa CDC Community Outreach Coordinator and Events Planner Rosalind Ambrose commented that  “We want all the homeowner associations to know we are here and available to assist in anyway possible”. “We’re looking forward to being invited to their association meetings to share who were are and what our purpose is “. We’re new to the Greater Edmondson Village communities and our goal is to be proactive partners to all the residence that surround our future headquarters”.

Morgan State University, School of Architecture will provide plans for the design and development of the site and Sankofa will assist the homeowners in applying  for community project grants as well as other grants/donations  related to vacant lot restoration.

Sankofa CDC is affiliated with the New Psalmist Baptist Church which is located in SW Baltimore City.  If you would like to make a monetary donation, your tax deductible contributions can be sent to Sankofa CDC 4501 1/2 Old Frederick Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21229-2667.
