Youth Entrepreneurial Academy (YEA)

Through a grant from Associate Black Charities, during July 2003, Sankofa sponsored what we envision as a future year round program working with youth ages 12-17. The program seeks to train youth in their formative years when their understanding of their role in society is being shaped and expose them to new skill sets and values.

The mission of YEA is to introduce to youth business basics needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century. This program differs from Junior Achievement in that it seeks to instill, in each participant the need to search within and to identify resources that empower our youth to further develop into future business owners.

Students are selected through an application and interview process and once selected, participate in learning all aspects of owning a business. Students are actively involved in studying aspects of marketing/sales, business administration, finance and manufacturing/production. Field trips to small, medium and large businesses and other agencies enhance the hands on experience made possible with the support of local business owners.

One Church Ten Families (OCTF)

The one church (New Psalmist Baptist Church) and ten families comprise the One Church Ten Families project. This service is a signature project of the Juvenile and Family Court Judges’ Leadership Council (JLC). The JLC’s goal under the OCTF project is to establish a working partnership with the faith communities to create a comprehensive child centered, but family focused, "wrap around" system that serves both as a dispositional alternative and provides a network of support services for families in need.
