Voyage of Exploration – S.T.E.M. Program

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Sankofa Community Development Corporation (CDC) and Living Classrooms Foundation (LCF) a $1.9M grant designed to supplement and enhance school curriculum for Middle School students (Grades 5–8).
The three (3) year, fully funded program was designed to broaden academic enrichment for underrepresented minority and low-income children and youth by providing content-rich, inquiry-based STEM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs using maritime settings.  The backdrop consists of the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Meyers Maritime Park and Museum and various ports throughout Baltimore City.  The program’s curriculum provided exposure to enhance and encourage boat building skills, teamwork, leadership abilities, engineering, math and life skills.  The grant, which began in September 2008, has allowed Sankofa to programmatically explore the voyage of our ‘past’, ‘present’, and ‘future’.  The program, which targets to serve over 360 students annually, incorporates an after-school component, a consecutive 7-week Fall & Winter session, and several 2-week Summer Learning Expeditions sessions.

Youth Entrepreneurial Academy (YEA)

Through a grant from Associate Black Charities, during July 2003, Sankofa sponsored what we envision as a future year round program working with youth ages 12-17. The program seeks to train youth in their formative years when their understanding of their role in society is being shaped and expose them to new skill sets and values.
The mission of YEA is to introduce to youth business basics needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century. This program differs from Junior Achievement in that it seeks to instill, in each participant the need to search within and to identify resources that empower our youth to further develop into future business owners.
Students are selected through an application and interview process and once selected, participate in learning all aspects of owning a business. Students are actively involved in studying aspects of marketing/sales, business administration, finance and manufacturing/production. Field trips to small, medium and large businesses and other agencies enhance the hands on experience made possible with the support of local business owners.
